The SPECTRUM website uses a Java applet to display a list of available reports
to you. This applet relies on Java which, up until April 2004, was part of every
Microsoft operating system. As part of a settlement between Microsoft and Sun
Microsystems, Microsoft no longer ships their version of the Java Virtual Machine
(JVM) with their operating systems though they will continue to support it until
2007. New PC’s with Windows XP SP2 no longer include the MS JVM nor does
Microsoft make one available. Sun provides their version of the JVM but it does
not function identically to the MS version.
The solution is to install the MS JVM and update it. Instructions are below.
When the download is complete, unzip the file and run the executable – when
it has finished installing, you will be prompted to reboot.
After you reboot, go to www.windowsupdate.com – it
should determine that you will need a security update for the MSJVM. Download
and install the security update – again you will be prompted to reboot.
When you have completed the two steps above, you will be able to view and download
reports.
